Bokaro: In a display of communal harmony, a group of Muslim youngsters helped carry the body of a 72-year-old Hindu neighbour chanting “Ram naam satya hai” for 8km for cremation in Giridih district on Sunday.
Jageshwar Turi said his mother Lakhiya Devi died on Saturday and many of her relatives living nearby paid their condolences the following day. But when the funeral procession was about to begin, they avoided help fearing that she had died of Covid-19.
Lakhiya Devi was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Ranchi for various age-related ailments, but Turi and his family members brought her back to Giridih on Saturday after the doctors said her chances of survival were slim.
Turi said it would have been difficult for him to carry the body to cremation, had not half-a-dozen local Muslim youths come forward to help him.
